The year is nearly over what now 12 reso-YOU-tions for 2019

The year is nearly over what now 12 reso-YOU-tions for 2019The year is nearly over what now 12 reso-YOU-tions for 2019This year is nearly over and you might be looking at the New Year with some skepticism. You didnt accomplish everything you had wanted to at the beginning of 2018. You might not have gotten the promotion you wanted, the new career role you had wished for or over the doubt the holds you back from the executive presence that commands the attention necessary to be effective. You are probably thinking about your resolutions for 2019.Would you take a trip without a map? Of course not. We think we can create a resolution and get there just because we want to. It doesnt work that way. The reason most resolutions fail is because they are simply notions centered on getting something and not grounded in the root of what drives people authenticity and values.12 Reso-YOU-tions for Results in 20191. Write down your goals. Studies show that people who write down their intentions reach them far more than those who dont.2. Define what you will let go of. Whats the head trash that inserts itself in your life every time you want to make a leap? Sometimes we need to eliminate before we can add.3. Define who you will let go of. People are toxic too. Who would you be without negative influence?4. Sure up a financial safety net. Max out your 401(k) contributions. Take only short term car loans. Automatically deposit from each paycheck into a non-accessible savings fund. Revisit your estate plan and bank accounts for changes in beneficiary status. Delay social security.5. Put a mirror on your desk. Do you smile on the phone? What can you learn from inviting feedback without self-criticizing or being defensive?6. Tame your head trash by labeling the root feeling, being curious and affirming that the feeling is OK. What is at the root of your behavior? It is certainly a feeling. Im feeling a little freaked out by the risk and its ok Im capable not I am so freaked ou t and overwhelmed I dont have time to do that.7. Pick one aber sicher to describe your intent for the next year. Post it with the anniversary date where you will see it every day. Open, Influence, Leverage, Courage, Explore, Welcome, Innovate etc. Pick a new word in a year.8. Build your self-awareness by working from the inside out. Name brand suits, designer shoes and expensive accessories are no substitute for character, humility, talent, influence, self-awareness and charity. Who are you no matter where you are seated at the table? Slow down and name what you are discovering.9. Invite compassion in by intention. When feeling afraid, conflicted or guarded think, I will pause to switch to deep listening for the big picture issue, or May I be the catalyst for compassion here.10. Start a Gratitude Journal to release expectations and center in the present moment. Write one thing you are grateful for each day. Write one thing you notice about yourself each day. Its hard to compare whe n the bright light of thanks is shining on the good things.11. Simplify by scheduling systems into your life. Bookkeeping night, laundry day, grocery shopping day, expenses analysis time, date night, monthly measurement of key indicators.12. Plan one BIG Leap. It should be something that really scares you and excites you You should be able to describe it in four words or less. Leap with an intent to learn where failures are learning tools in the process. Within the next year I will If you dont know where you want to be next year at this time, youre already there. Married Couples In The Military

Married Couples In The MilitaryMarried Couples In The MilitaryThese days, it seems that mora and more married couples are joining the military together and getting married shortly after training. They face many challenges that military members married to civilians dont deal with, but also have several advantages. The military does not guarantee to assign married couples together, however, it will try.The term is Dual-Military Couples. Both members of the relationship are active duty, but also military spouses. A family plan is needed for this couple especially when kids are involved. See below for more information on how many of ansicht couples make it work. Join Spouse Programs Each of the tafelgeschirrs has an assignment program called Join Spouse. Basically, under this program, the military will try as hard as it can to station military spouses at the same base or within 100 miles of each other. Note there is no guarantee the military just agrees to try. The services will not create a new slot for Join Spouse there has to be an existing slot in the rank/job to which the member(s) can be assigned. This can be a difficult issue every time a couple is required to change duty stations. About 80 percent of military couples are assigned within 100 miles of each other. That sounds pretty good until you realize that means 20 percent of military couples are not assigned close to each other. There are some stories of couples who never get stationed together, however, these tend to be members of separate services, one being Air Force and one being Navy, for instance.Obviously, its easier for the services to assign couples together when both are in the same branch. For one thing, it takes less coordination, as only one branch assignment division is involved. Additionally, there arent that many Air Force bases or Marine Corps bases that are close together. So, marrying someone in the same branch of service obviously increases your chance of a successful Join Spouse assignment. Applying for Join Spouse Programs If only one member applies for a Join Spouse, the assignment system wont process it. Then its up to the military to determine who should move (or whether both couples should move), based on the needs of the service and funding constraints. Time in service applies as well. In general, in order for a first-term member (a military member on his/her first enlistment), assigned to a CONUS (Continental United States) base, to move overseas, he/she must have 12 months time-on-station. In order for the first term member to move from one CONUS base to another, he/she must 24 months time-on-station. Typically newlywed couples new to the military who live on different bases as their first tour assignment may not live together for a few years until they complete their assignment. However, if they enter into Join Spouse and apply for an overseas billet together, the likelihood of that transfer in a few years will be more possible for the couple to serve together. Housing and Allowances for Married Military Couples Military couples stationed together can live off-base and receive a housing allowance or can give up the housing allowance and live free in on-base family housing, just as members married to a civilian can. If there are no dependents, each member is treated as single for housing allowance purposes, and each will receive the single-rate Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for their rank and assignment location. If there are children, one member receives the with-dependent rate, and the other member receives the single rate. In most cases, the couples choose the senior-ranking member to receive the with dependent rate, as it means more money. Complicated Career Decisions Turning down a career enhancing duty station in order to stay together can be a dilemma many dual military couples have to face. The dual military couple relationship needs to be more flexible to accommodate both careers than their civilian cou nterparts. Due to the nature of military duty stations, commutes, and deployments, the dual military couple can expect changes in the balance of career and family responsibilities over time. Family Separation Allowance Family Separation Allowance is normally paid any time a military member is separated from his/her dependents for longer than 30 days due to military orders. The same applies to military-married-to-military, except The members must be residing together immediately prior to the departureOnly one member can receive the allowance. Payment will be made to the member whose orders resulted in the separation. If both members receive orders requiring departure on the same day, then payment will go to the senior member. Care of Children (Dependents) Military couples with children must develop a family care plan that details exactly what the care arrangements are in the event that both members must deploy. Failure to develop and maintain a workable family care plan can r esult in discharge from the service for one or both of the military members.

5 important life lessons to make you more successful

5 important life lessons to make you mora successful5 important life lessons to make you more successfulI wish Id been smarter in my teens and early twenties. Like many others, I thought I knew what was best for myself, but I wasnt seasoned enough to understand how life lessons are gifts that keep coming- until we die.In my younger years, I didnt characterize many of my life lessons as gifts. They looked more like trials and tribulations. Its taken a while for me to understand that those same trials and tribulations created my destiny they created parteie I became over the years.Life is a process we rise up and fall down we succeed and we fail. But these experiences hold important lessons for us- ones we need to learn if we hope to be a success in business and life. Here are 5 important life lessons to make you more successfulLife Lesson 1 Define Good ValuesToo often, success is measured only in terms of money or personal power. We all know people who became famous or made lots of mon ey but failed miserably at being a good person because they didnt take the time to define good values for themselves. To become a successful human being, we need to mature physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively, spiritually, and morally. For many, the development of ethics and values is something that happens with little or no conscious thought. As a result, their life revolves around crappy values like the pursuit of pleasure, possession of material things, and a narcissistic me first mentality.Despite what the media tells you, pleasure wont create life satisfaction. If you measure yur success by material things and elend your behavior, youre a shallow person. As far as narcissism goes- if others think youre God, thats OK but if you think you are, that makes you a jerk.Humans were created forwholeness. We yearn to live a whole life, one of purpose and value. At our core, we are driven by a desire to be closer to people, to be part of meaningful conversations and community. P leasure, material things, and selfishness are nothing but empty highs.Bad values are destructive and fractious. You have no control over them, which makes your life satisfaction dependent on the whim of others. Instead, nail down good values then pleasure, material things, and success will emerge from them. Good values happen on the inside, in that place that has no shape but gives us meaning and yearns for good. How To Make It Work For You Values are personal choices you make about whats important to you. Here are some questions that will help you identify your top values in lifeWhat are the three things you like fruchtwein about yourself? Why?Who is the happiest person you know? Why?Who are the two people you like and respect the most? Why?Who are you?Life Lesson 2 Develop Self-AwarenessWhen people ask me to talk about how they can becomementally tough, I suggest they start with self-awareness. Self-awareness is the ability to take an honest look at ourselves, without judging what we find as either good or bad. Many people dont take the time or make the effort to get to know the most important person in their life- themselves.Ignorance of your competition makes you vulnerable. Ignorance of yourself makes you stupid- LaRae QuyEverything we need can be found inside ourselves. We have the tools we need to be aware of our bodies, aware of our emotions, and aware of our relationships. We cannot become self aware by reading self-help books or articles.Instead, we need a deep understanding of our past and current self. People with painful experiences in the past often balk at reliving that part of their life. Our experiences (both good and bad) shape how we see the world, so its vital for us to understand how the world has shaped our personalities.Your narrative is the story of your life and it impacts everything you do. Once you recognize your pattern of behavior when confronted with obstacles, disappointments, and setbacks you can control your response. Self-aware ness enables you to anticipate a negative reaction and choose a behavior that will help you land on your feet when confronted by the unknown. As Woody Allen said, Its important to have some laughs, but you gotta suffer a little too because otherwise, you miss the whole point of life. How To Make It Work For You Make it a daily practice to set aside twenty minutes to reflect upon your day. Identify what experiences, people, or settings prompted an energizing joy. Why? Identify what experiences, people, or settings prompted an interior heaviness. Why?Life Lesson 3 Dont Settle For HappinessHappiness is a popular word these days but lets be honest- happiness is nothing more than a fleeting emotion. If you want to live a shallow life, then go ahead and pursue all the happiness you can possibly cram into one day. And then start over again tomorrow because the pursuit of that elusive value will keep you on the run for the rest of your life.Happiness is a bandaid for what really ails us- our need to live a life full of value and meaning (see life lesson 1). Of far more importance is to seek the things in life that bring us joy and contentment. Dont settle for anything less. Moments of happiness will automatically spring from those things that produce life satisfaction and fulfillment. To live is the rarest thing is the world. Most people exist, that is all- Oscar WildeHow To Make It Work For You Answer these questionsLife Lesson 4 The Best Lessons Usually Show Up As FailuresOne of the primary reasons we learn so much from our failures is that they get our attention. If everything purrs along at a good clip, we can become complacent. One thing FBI agents learn early in training is its not the streets or guns that will kill you, its complacency thatll lead to extinction.Failure will often persuade you to try something new, and you will keep drifting until you finally succeed at something. And that is where most of us stay- at mediocrity. Its a mediocrity that that comes fr om success without failure.Failure reminds us what we really want in life. If we experience a failure while in pursuit of an important goal, well push ourselves even harder. Well lean into our resilience to move ahead. At other times, a failure is a good time to re-evaluate our strategies and to shift gears.Warren Bennis once said, All great leaders have, without exception, experienced traumatic failure. Its as if that moment the iron entered their soul that moment created the resilience that leaders need. While many life lessons show up as a failure, success can also produce good lessons. In a recent study,Professor Adam Kepecs of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratorysays we need to recall our victories as well. While failure gets our attention, success produces a brain chemical called dopamine which builds confidence in ourselves. Since the brains primary function is to keep us safe, the shot of dopamine reminds us that we can make clear, quick decisions in the future.Life is a wild an d crazy rollercoaster, full of ups, downs, and unexpected turns. If things are good right now, enjoy it it wont last forever. When life is going wrong, dont worry it wont last forever either. How To Make It Work For You The next time you experience failure, take a look at your goals (you have goals, right?) Review how your goals will lead you toward fulfilling your mission (you have one of those as well, right?) Maybe your goals need to be tweaked in light of new information. Plan ahead by anticipating the repercussions of another failure. Always have a Plan B and a solid action plan to help you move past a setback.Life Lesson 5 Your Attitude Is The One Thing You Can Always ControlMuch like happiness, optimism is another dud that will get you nowhere. Lots of self-help books encourage people to always look for the bright side of life and deny the negative stuff. Shit happens, theres no way to get around it. Sometimes the best thing you can do is look the beast in the face if you want to keep your sanity and move ahead.Optimism is a way to ignore many of lifes legitimate problems. It can be a way to avoid unpleasantness because optimists truly think that things will change for the better.Positive thinking, on the other hand, accepts the highs and the lows of lifes cycle. It doesnt deny the negative positive thinkers believe theyll overcome their circumstances rather than believe their circumstances will change. Our attitude impacts our thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The way we see things affects our chances of success and life fulfillment. How To Make It Work For You As you review your goals and steps forward, take a critical look at how things could go wrong. Youre not being negative youre simply pragmatic. When you examine how things might not turn out as you expect, youre better prepared for the battle. FBI agents dont prepare for arrests by assuming things will unfold as envisioned. Instead, they look at them from every angle so they can anticipate where it might go wrong. Do the same thing.Thisarticlewas originally published onLaRaeQuy.

How Todays High-Demand Jobs Impact Salaries

How Todays High-Demand Jobs Impact SalariesHow Todays High-Demand Jobs Impact SalariesHow Todays High-Demand Jobs Impact Salaries Rodd, PayScaleDespite the dubious Fiscal Cliff, wage growth in the US has continued to flourish. Across all industries measured by the PayScale index, Q4 2012 showed some of the strongest progress since 2006, including small business salaries. While this is good news for job seekers, increasing wages for high-demand jobs can be a double-edged sword for some companies, including retaining top employees, while simultaneously designing a compensation strategy that attracts new talent. This is especially true in industries that experience an increase in wages, and in companies that offer and require specialized job skills.Lets take a look at industries that are offering high-paying jobs.Energy and Healthcare Lead the WayThough most industries saw an upsurge in wages, the current power players in high-demand jobs are energy, tech, and healthcare staffing.Addition ally, wages in mining, oil, and gas exploration and utilities experienced a national increase of almost 6 percent over the past year, as well as rising projected growth rates over the next ten years.Energy wages were already seeing a steady increase during less prosperous economic times given the mandate for oil and other innovations in energy-related technology. It is highly likely that we will see an increase in alternative energy jobs as well, including the need for advancement in related fields. As demonstrated by the PayScale Index, energy wages are not the only hot job commodity. IT jobs continue to thrive, especially in tech-savvy cities like Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston, which all respectively experienced an annual wage growth of more than 3.9 percent.Tech Skills Are BoomingThe need for software developers and IT staffing is booming, mixed with increasing projected growth rates (upwards of 30 percent) that show no sign of slowing down, as shown in the Payscale Index.Eve n with the amplified demand for accomplished tech talent, the available talent schwimmbecken remains shallow, creating a highly competitive labor market.Whether your industry experienced the same types of wage growth, keep in mind that any economic upswing will permeate throughout the overall job market. This can be a gradual process, which is why an arsenal of data is your best line of defense in the talent wars. Avoid the Pitfalls of Employee Recognition Programs

Avoid the Pitfalls of Employee Recognition ProgramsAvoid the Pitfalls of Employee Recognition ProgramsAvoid the Pitfalls of Employee Recognition Programs Grenny, co-author of Influencer The New Science of Leading Change (McGraw Hill, 2013)To many employees, being singled out in front of and compared to peers might not be all that rewarding. It could be just the equivalent of saying, Congratulations Heres a hundred dollars, a beautiful plaque with your name engraved on it and four weeks of unrelenting ridicule from your coworkersComedian Demetri Martin summed up the way a lot of employees feel about such programs when he said, I think employee-of-the-month is a good example of when a person can be a winner and a loser at the same time. Why Rewards Can BackfireOrganizational scholars have long found that many employees leave corporate award ceremonies not motivated and excited as intended but with exactly the opposite reaction. They exit demotivated and upset because they themselves we rent honored. In fact, many binnensee the whole ceremony as a sham. Interviews reveal that typically half of those who attend corporate awards programs believe that they were far better qualified than the person who was honored but that they didnt get picked for political reasons. And its not just token awards that can go amiss. You could fill volumes with stories of how carefully considered incentive schemes have run amok. One hospital, for example, found that anesthesiologists who were paid based on personal production were less willing to jump in and help one another when someone elses patient was reacting badly.Drilling for a BonusConsider a couple of the former Soviet Unions attempts to dabble in incentive schemes. In the energy sector, rubles were literally being thrown away in the search for oil reserves because Soviet workers received bonuses according to the number of feet they exerzierened. It turns out that its far easier to drill many shallow holes than to drill a few deepe r ones which is exactly what happened.Instead of following the geological advisories to drill deep to find existing reserves, workers were happy merely poking the surface over and over turning up very little oil. After all, its what they were rewarded for doing.Employee Incentives Gone Askew One woman we worked with a manager at an internationally renowned company decided that her employees lacked business innovation, so she instituted a simple suggestion program. What could be more innocent? To encourage creativity, she asked each work group to meet for at least a half hour per week to brainstorm new work methods, solutions to longstanding problems, and possible new products. To put teeth into the new program, she put together a committee that reviewed submissions and then awarded cash prizes to employees who came up with ideas that were judged as real moneymakers.Within a few months the cash-for-ideas program had completely broken down. In fact, members of one work group ended up beating up one of their own team members as a result of the program. It turns out the team came up with a really good idea, and Charlie, the aforementioned team member, promised that hed take care of the paperwork. He then submitted the suggestion under his own name and kept the $5,000 bonus for himself. When his teammates found out about the deception, first they confronted him, then someone shoved him, then a melee broke out and Charlie ended up in the emergency room.To avoid further injuries, the owner did away with the incentive program. Of course, she leise invited suggestions, but none came in. Employees now believed that she was shorting them by asking for ideas without offering incremental pay.She had hoped to use the suggestion program to stimulate innovation, but she found that by paying people for their thoughts, she had inadvertently sent the message that making suggestions was outside a persons normal job requirements. Now employees believed that if they came up with a good idea, they deserved to be paid a bonus. Otherwise, they were being exploited.A More Rewarding ApproachSo, the question is, how do you use incentives wisely?Take care to ensure that employee rewardscome soon, are gratifying, and are clearly tied to vital behaviors. When you do so, even small rewards can be used to help people overcome some of the most profound and persistent problems. When you do want to provide a supplemental reward to help shape employee behavior, as the much maligned adage goes, its often the thought, not the gift, that counts. Thats because the thought behind an incentive often carries symbolic significance and taps into a variety of social forces that carry a lot of weight, much more so than the face value of the incentive itself. So, as you think of awards, dont be afraid to let the thought behind the award carry the burden for you.Author BioJoseph Grenny, along with Kerry Patterson, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan and Al Switzler, are authors of Influencer T he New Science of Leading Change(McGraw-Hill, 2013).
